Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date following each item. NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:
The proponent proposes to renovate and expand an existing fish processing plant located in Portugal Cove to produce and export value-added and underutilized seafood and agrifood products. The main products will be supermarket-ready, including breaded products, entrees in sauce and pickle-based products. The expansion involves the construction of a two-storey building on a concrete slab. Construction is tentatively scheduled to commence before the end of 1997. The project was registered on October 3, 1997, public comments must be received before November 7, 1997 and the minister's decision is due on November 17, 1997.
The proponent proposes to construct and operate a facility in Tilley Cove, Robert's Arm, to process cultured mussels for the Canadian and export market. The plant will include a production area, offices, employee facilities, repair area and storage space, outside parking and loading facilities. The construction period will be approximately two months and is tentatively scheduled to commence this fall. The project was registered on October 6, 1997, public comments must be received by November 7, 1997, and the minister's decision is due on November 20, 1997.
The proponent has submitted draft Terms of Reference (TOR) for the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement for the project. Copies of the draft TOR are available from the Environmental Assessment Division, St. John's office. Comments should be received from the public before November 12, 1997. The minister's decision on acceptance of the TOR is due on November 16, 1997.
The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the following undertaking which has recently been registered and examined by government and the public. The undertaking is released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements.
