Green Depot Official Opening - Riverhead

Riverhead Green Depot held their official opening today at 1:00 p.m. Deputy Mayor Brian Critch of the Town of Riverhead, John White of the Riverhead Recreation Committee and Sandy Ward representing the Riverhead Green Depot were on hand for the ribbon-cutting event. The Riverhead Recreation Committee is the operator of the Green Depot in Riverhead and is set up on the main highway into Riverhead.

In an area of about 4,900 citizens, the Recycling Depot encompasses communities from Peter's River to North Harbour. John White, chairman for the Riverhead Recreation Committee, stated, "To date we have received over 160,000 beverage containers at this location. That is since we started just over three months ago. This system helps tremendously in our fund raising efforts for the recreation activities of our young people."

Environment Minister Oliver Langdon stated: "The Deposit Refund System for beverage containers was put in place to reduce litter and to reduce waste going to landfill. We are very pleased to announce that over 40 million beverage containers have been recovered for recycling since January. At this rate we are sure to reach our target rate of 50 per cent recovery for the first year."

MHA Anthony Sparrow stated: "This environmental initiative is a positive step for our province. It keeps our highways and recreational areas clean and diverts beverage containers to Green Depots for recycling. I would like to congratulate Mr. White and the Recreation Committee and wish them success in reaching their goals."

His Worship, Mayor Dan Daley is looking forward to an even cleaner town by encouraging residents to participate in the Trash to Cash program. Mayor Daley says, "The residents of Riverhead are very community-minded and support the Trash to Cash program because it means a reduction in the empty containers left in our parks, on the sides of streets, and carried to our land fills. It also provides funds for our community recreation activities."

The business hours for the Riverhead Green Depot are Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For further information, you can contact the Riverhead Recreation Committee at (709) 525-2260.
