Environment Week and the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards Ceremony

National Environment Week is June 1-8, 1997. This year, the province is promoting a "Clean Up For Cabot" theme to place special emphasis on the Cabot 500 celebrations.

One of the highlights of Environment Week is the presentation of the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental awards.

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Environment and Labour, along with Deris Hollett, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Women's Institutes will host the 8th Annual Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards Ceremony at the Freshwater Resource Centre, on Tuesday, June 3, at 7 p.m.

The Environmental Awards Program recognizes Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who have contributed in a meaningful way to the preservation, protection and restoration of our environment. The aim is to help educate, inform and encourage all citizens to play an active part in the environmental health of our province.

  • Nominations were accepted in six categories:
    1. Individual
    2. Citizen's Group
    3. Education
    4. Youth
    5. Business
    6. Municipal

In addition to the Environmental Awards, Mr. Aylward will announce a new national award program for pollution prevention and present a grant for the Newfoundland Environmental Industry Association.
