The following is being distributed at the request of the Human Rights Commission:

The Human Rights Commission met for its regular meeting in St. John's on May 2 and 3, 1997. Fourteen complaints were reviewed by the commissions. Of these, seven were dismissed, two were withdrawn by the complainants, one was tabled and two had settlements approved. The other two complaints were forwarded to the chief adjudicator for appointment of a Board of Inquiry. Both of these complaints involved persons alleging discrimination in the workplace, one on the grounds of physical disability and the other on the grounds of mental disability, contrary to section 9 of the Human Rights Code.

The commissioners approved a request from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary for an exemption under section 19 of the Human Rights Code to allow for a program to attempt to increase the number of women candidates meeting requirements for admission to the police training program.

The commission will hold its next meeting in Corner Brook on July 9 and 10, 1997.
