Fuel spill in Gander

Approximately 87,000 litres of Jet A fuel spilled from a pipeline at the Shell Tank Farm at the Gander Airport yesterday.

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Environment and Labour, said he was informed by government officials that a spill had occurred at 2:50 p.m. on Thursday, March 6. Because the incident took place on federal property, Environment Canada is the lead response agency and is assisted by provincial officials with the Government Services Centre. Shell Oil has acquired the services of the Petroleum Cooperative Association to respond to the incident with clean-up and recovery equipment.

Mr. Aylward said provincial and federal officials will continue to work together with the company's representatives to ensure the site is cleaned-up.
