Environment and Labour Minister Kevin Aylward has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies can be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date following each item.

  • NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

    Pine Cove (Baie Verte) Gold Mine Resubmission
    Proponent: Raymo Processing Limited

The proponent proposes to construct and operate an open pit gold mine and mill at Pine Cove, Baie Verte Peninsula. The property has some 2.4 million tonnes of ore at a diluted grade of 2.93 grams Au/tonne. The ore will be mined year round and hauled to the on-site mill. Following crushing, grinding and flotation, the resulting concentrate will be trucked to the Raymo Processing Ltd. mill at the Rambler property for further processing. This project was previously registered and released from the Environmental Assessment Process in 1992. The minister's decision for release of a project is effective for a period of three years and thereafter the proponent must register the undertaking again, if the undertaking has not commenced. The project was registered on January 8, 1997 and the minister's decision is due on February 22, 1997.

  • Baie Verte Tannery
    Proponent: Dorset Tannery Inc.

The proponent proposes to construct and operate a cow hide and seal pelt tannery at the site of the former Baie Verte asbestos mine. Approximately 1,000 hides will be processed at the tannery and the plant will be in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. An existing building will be renovated. The undertaking will consist of a tanning facility, storage area, offices, and parking lot. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 1997. The project was registered on January 8, 1997 and the minister's decision is due on February 22, 1997.

The public is invited to examine these registration documents and offer written comment to the minister on whether an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) should be ordered. The deadline for the receipt of public comments is February 9, 1997.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT REQUIRED

    Silver Mountain (Upper Humber) Hydroelectric Development
    Proponent: Deer Lake Power Company Limited

The minister has directed the proponent to prepare and submit an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The minister will appoint an assessment committee for the purpose of advising him on scientific and technical matters related to the undertaking. Public submissions on the registration document are invited during the guideline preparation stage.

  • REVISIONS TO ENVIRONMENTAL PREVIEW REPORT

    Garia Bay (Northwest Brook) Hydroelectric Development
    Proponent: Genergy Inc.- Project Manager on behalf of Penny Hydro
    Inc.

The public review of the Environmental Preview Report has been extended to January 15, 1997. The minister's decision is due January \ 24, 1997.

  • NO ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT REQURIED

The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the following undertakings which have recently been registered and examined by government and the public. The undertakings are released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements.

  • - Richmond Hill (St. John's) Golf Course - Phase 1
    - Robinson's Eel Aquaculture Grow-Out Facility

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known.
