SEPTEMBER 2, 1997 PLEBISCITE OFFICIAL RESULTS

The official addition of the votes for the September 2, 1997 Plebiscite on the Future of Education was conducted on September 4, 1997. Under the authority of Section 82(3) of the Election Act, Chapter E-3 of the Revised Statutes of Newfoundland, 1990 as amended, the following voting information is presented for each Electoral District.

A total of 205,705 votes were cast in the 1997 Plebiscite comprised of 199,833 at 1,976 Regular Polls and 5,872 votes at 81 Advance Polls. Voter turnout was 53.5 % in comparison to 52.4% in the 1995 Plebiscite, and 74.4% in the 1996 General Election.

There were: 149,315Yes votes (72.7%), 56,020 No votes (27.3%), and 370 Rejected ballots. In comparison, the 1995 Plebiscite yielded: 110,614 Yes votes (54.8%), 90,673 No votes (45.0%), and 423 Rejected ballots.

A statistical report on the 1997 Plebiscite giving poll by poll results will be published at the earliest opportunity and within 9 months as provided under Section 170 of the Election Act.
