The following is being released at the request of the Atlantic Provinces Education Foundation:

A new framework for science education in Atlantic Canada

The Atlantic provinces' ministers of education released today the Foundation for the Atlantic Canada Science Curriculum, the new framework for science programs in Atlantic Canadian schools. This document provides a vision for enabling all students in our provinces become scientifically literate citizens. The framework reflects current provincial, national and international thinking and is consistent with the new pan-Canadian project which articulates a common vision for science education across Canada. It stresses the links between science, technology, society and the environment, and provides the foundation for a new curriculum reorganized around real-life issues that will encourage students to solve problems and make connections between science theory and their world.

The Foundation for the Atlantic Canada Science Curriculum spells out common expectations for what students should know, do and value in science as a result of their learning experiences from grades one through graduation. Specifically, the foundation includes an overview of the focus of science education in Atlantic Canada, identifies outcome statements detailing what students should know and be able to do at key stages in their education, and describes the nature of the instructional environment in which effective science learning can take place.

The Foundation for the Atlantic Canada Science Curriculum represents a significant achievement in the transition to a new, and leading-edge, shared curriculum across Atlantic Canada. This winter new science curriculum guides for grades one through 10 will be developed. The guides will support the curriculum outcomes statements and vision in the foundation document and will contain more detailed information on learning, teaching and assessment strategies, as well as suggestions for resources.
