The following is being released at the request of the Atlantic Provinces Education Foundation:

Human Rights Education

The Ministers of Education of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador are pleased to announce the publication of the guide entitled L'education aux droits de la personne. The guide is designed for teachers from kindergarten to Grade 12 and will be distributed to the francophone schools of the Atlantic provinces and immersion schools of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland by the departments. English language human rights' resources were released in 1995 by APEF.

L'education aux droits de la personne contains several activities that teachers will be able to integrate into existing curricula and that will enable them to develop a school environment where individual and collective rights will be respected. The following are the general outcomes of the guide:

- to make students and teachers aware of human rights and of their importance at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and social levels;

- to develop positive attitudes in students and teachers with respect to the application of human rights;

- to develop critical thinking skills in students and teachers concerning the violation of human rights; and

- encourage the respect of human rights in the daily lives of teachers and students.

The guide was developed under the direction of Catalina Ferrer, Joan Gamble, and Simone Rainville of the Universite de Moncton. The foundation recognizes the contribution of this working team. The foundation also acknowledges the work conducted by the project working committee made up of curriculum consultants from each department.

This resource was produced with financial assistance from the Department of Justice of Canada. The APEF wishes to recognize the federal government for its contribution to this initiative.

The Atlantic Provinces Education Foundation (APEF) is an agency of the Council of Maritime Premiers (CMP). It is composed of the New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island education ministers. The APEF is funded by the Council of Maritime Premiers and the four education departments of the Atlantic provinces. The purpose of the foundation is to promote regional cooperation in education.
