School Board Elections Deferred

The Minister of Education Roger Grimes, announced today that school board elections will be placed on hold until the new Term 17 is dealt with by the House of Commons and the Senate.

"We have every confidence that the matter will proceed expeditiously in Ottawa," said Mr. Grimes.

Government felt it would be confusing and expensive to have two school board elections and very unfair to expect candidates to go through the time and expense of getting elected for a short time frame. Therefore, it approached the church leaders seeking their concurrence for a deferral of school board elections pending the passage of the new Term 17. Mr. Grimes said he is pleased that the churches have responded in a positive manner to this request.

The church leaders have agreed to withdraw their objection and together with government call upon Mr. Justice Barry to seek a modification to his court order of July 8, 1997.

Mr. Grimes said the appointed school boards currently running the system will remain in place for a short period of time until Ottawa deals with the new Term.

"We want to ensure that the next time we elect school boards, it will be for a full four-year term and that these boards have the mandate to proceed with organizing the education system in a manner fully consistent with the new Term 17.

"Government is determined that tax dollars will be spent wisely, therefore, we will have only one school board election," concluded Mr. Grimes.
