DAVID THOMAS AWARDED THE 1997 SCHOLARSHIP TO ATLANTIC COLLEGE, WALES

Roger Grimes, Minister of Education, today announced that this year two level II students have been awarded scholarships to attend a United World College. Jeff Conway, a second year high school student at Brother Rice High School will receive one of the scholarships to attend Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in British Columbia. A second year high school student from Musgravetown Central High, David Thomas will receive the other scholarship to attend Atlantic College in Wales, UK. Both students will begin their studies in September 1997.

The scholarships are worth $19,000 each and cover tuition, books, room and board for two years of study at Pearson or Atlantic College.

Lester Pearson College and Atlantic College are two of the eight United World Colleges situated around the world. These colleges are dedicated to the promotion of international understanding by creating an environment in which students from many countries and cultures are brought together to study and to serve the community. Students graduate with the world respected International Baccalaureate which largely replaces the 12th grade and university freshman year throughout North America. Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan is the President of the United World Colleges and Nelson Mandela, President of the Republic of South Africa, is the President of the United World Colleges International Council.

This year's winners are two of about 500 scholarship winners chosen on a competitive basis from more than 75 countries around the world. Jeff and David won their scholarships on the basis of high academic achievement and qualities of character made evident in a detailed application form and a personal interview.

A selection committee composed of representatives from the Department of Education, the Newfoundland Teachers' Association, Memorial University, and the school districts screened the applications, carried out the interviews and decided the winners of the scholarship.

The minister noted that the 1995 winner of the Pearson Scholarship, Gerard March of Brother Rice High School graduates this spring with the International Baccalaureate diploma. Erin Noel of Brother Rice High School, who was the 1996 winner, will be returning to Pearson in the fall for her second and final year.
