March 20, 1997 Government Provides Stable
Funding for Provincial Information The Minister of Education, Roger Grimes, says government will maint ain the level of funding for the Provincial Information and Library Resources Board in 1997-98 at $5.3 million. Government is committed to the provision of information and library services to the residents of the province and to providing more access to rural and remote areas. Fifty-two libraries in the province will be fully computerized by the end of the 1997-98 fiscal year meaning that 75 per cent of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will have access to the information highway. Grimes says the libraries have become total information centers providing residents with access to job information, tender calls by government, and business information. "Leading edge technology is providing people living in remote and rural areas with the same opportunities as those living in larger urban centers," said Mr. Grimes. "If residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are to capitalize on opportunities for employment they must be able to obtain information that is accurate and current." "We encourage citizens throughout our province to visit and make use of these important resource centers," concluded the minister.
