The following is being distributed at the request of Marine Atlantic:

Marine Atlantic president pursuing Fundy ferry bid

Marine Atlantic president Rod Morrison is taking a leave of absence in order to prepare a proposal to take over two ferry services presently operated by the Crown corporation.

Transport Canada has issued a request for proposals from parties interested in the operation of the Saint John - Digby and Yarmouth - Bar Harbor routes.

Morrison declared his intentions in a memorandum circulated to Marine Atlantic employees today.

"I consulted Canada's conflict of interest counsellor for guidance and I have been directed to step aside and take a leave of absence from my present responsibilities," Morrison said.

The request for proposal process is expected to take eight to 12 weeks from start to finish. It is anticipated that Marine Atlantic's board of directors will name an interim CEO shortly.
