Premier announces upgrading and paving of Conne River Access Road

Premier Brian Tobin, on behalf of Julie Bettney, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, and Oliver Langdon, MHA - Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune, along with Roger Simmons, MP - Burin-St. George's, on behalf of Ronald Irwin, Minister of the federal Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, today announced that the upgrading of the Conne River Access Road will begin later this fall. Paving will follow during the summer of 1997 and shall be completed by the end of September, 1997.

"I am delighted to be able to take part in this announcement today," said Mr. Tobin. "The paving and upgrading of the Conne River Access Road is very important to the future development of this area." Mr. Simmons said, "I am pleased to represent minister Irwin here today because I know this improvement to the Conne River Access Road is much needed and will benefit not only residents of this area but visitors alike."

The Premier noted that before actual upgrading of the road can begin, the project has to go through the environmental assessment process. The project has been registered with the Department of Environment and Labour. The premier anticipates the project will be given environmental approval within the next 30 to 45 days, barring any unforseen environmental concerns.

In an attempt to expedite the upgrading as much as possible, the premier said tenders will be called for the upgrading next week. This will put the department in a position to award a contract for the work as soon as the environmental approvals are given.

Mr. Langdon said, "It is nice that both the premier and Mr. Simmons were able to join us for this positive announcement today. I am sure their input is much appreciated by all of the people in this area of the province."

The premier concluded by saying the paving will complement the paving carried out on the reserve at Conne River this summer by the Band Council.
