Minister Announces $10 Million in Regional Trunk Roads Projects
Julie Bettney, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, is pleased to announce the
awarding of five contracts, totalling approximately $10 million, under the Regional Trunk
Roads Agreement.
Ms. Bettney said: "These capital road projects will improve our highway network
and will enhance the transportation of goods and people around the province. These
projects will benefit the construction industry and will create 500 person years of
employment."
Since 1991, $98 million has been spent under the $235 million Regional Trunk Roads
Agreement. This agreement is scheduled to conclude in 2003.
The list of projects is as follows:
- Project: Construction of Conception Bay North By-Pass, approximately six kilometres,
from Hallstown to Bay Roberts, and access road to Bay Roberts, 1.5 kilometres
approximately.
Contractor: S.M. Construction Limited of Stephenville Crossing was the
lowest of four bidders.
Contract value and completion date: $2,666,985 and is to be completed by November 30,
1996.
- Project: Upgrade and pave approximately 16 kilometres of Route 360, Bay d'Espoir
Highway, kilometre 20 to kilometre 36 as measured from the Trans Canada Highway
intersection.
Contractor: Penney Paving of St. John's was the lowest of five bidders.
Contract value and completion date: $2,291,671 and is to be completed by September 30,
1996.
- Project: Resurfacing approximately 20 kilometres of Route 410, Baie Verte Highway,
kilometre 20 to kilometre 40 as measured from the Trans Canada Highway intersection.
Contractor:
McNamara Construction Company of St. John's was the lowest of four bidders.
Contract value and completion date: $2,428,310 and is to be completed by September 30,
1996.
- Project: Grading approximately two kilometres of Conception Bay South By-Pass from
Greeleytown Road to Tilley's Road.
Contractor: Coady Construction and Excavating Ltd. of
Torbay was the lowest of nine bidders.
Contract value and completion date: $1,693,761 and is to be completed by October 31,
1996.
- Project: Construction of a reinforced concrete slab bridge at Heart's Content River,
Route 80.
Contractor: Concord Paving Limited of Carbonear was the lowest of six bidders.
Contract value and completion date: $236,274 and is to be completed by July 31, 1996.
The Regional Trunk Roads Agreement is cost-shared between Transport Canada and the
Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is part of the Canada-Newfoundland
Transportation Initiative, commonly referred to as the Roads for Rails Agreement.
