Section of Trans Labrador Highway closed to tractor trailer traffic

Julie Bettney, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, announced today that the section of the Trans Labrador Highway between Churchill Falls and Happy Valley-Goose Bay, approximately 290 kilometres, will be closed to tractor trailer traffic, effective immediately. However, light vehicles are still permitted to access the road.

Ms. Bettney said: "This measure has been taken in response to the annual spring thaw and run off period. It was not decided arbitrarily but rather after listening and consulting with those in the trucking industry. There are sections of this road that are near impassable in any event, therefore, I believe it would be in the best interest of everyone to close the road at this time."

The closure is expected to last four to six weeks. In the meantime, the contractor will continue to work on the road in order to have it open to all traffic as soon as possible.
