The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

After three years and numerous open tryout camps across the province the coaching staff of the 1997 Men's Canada Summer Games Basketball Program have made their final selection. Head coach Glenn Normore along with Clarence Sutton and George Power, identified over 200 athletes three years ago and recently finalized their roster to 12 players and two alternate players. Normore stated: "Some tough decision had to be made over the past three weeks and the process is always a difficult one. During the course of three years coaches get to know theisr athletes pretty well both technical and personally. We spent a lot of time with each other over the past three seasons and the decision to reduce individuals from the program was not an easy task. With the amount of fundraising, plans for relocation and investigating summer job opportunities, the early selection is aimed at reducing the pressure on players and families."

The team will travel to Brandon, Manitoba, August 9 - 16 to compete in the Canada Summer Games. Athletes selected to the team include: Richard Brenton of Marystown, Jeff Merrigan of Port aux Basques, Carl English of Patrick's Cove, Saj Joseph of Deer Lake, Craig Finlay of Trepassey, Frank Power of St. Mary's Bay and Greg Winter, Andrew Sinclair, Scott Gibbons, Ryan Michalski, Dion Landon and Matthew Chapman of St. John's. The alternates for the program include Peter White of Carbonear and Andy Moss of Deer Lake.
