The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

The team of skaters representing Newfoundland at the Atlantic Figure Skating Championships December 5 to 8 in Dartmouth left St. John's Airport at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The skaters earned the right to represent Newfoundland at the 1997 Sunlife Sectional Championship in November in Labrador City. The provincial team, sponsored by Travel Management, received the best wishes of Earl Howell as he bid them good luck at the airport.

The contingent led by Betty Brett, Team Manager and Skater Development Chairperson, and Chris Moores, Chairperson Newfoundland and Labrador Figure Skating Association, and includes six coaches and three chaperons as well as 18 skaters who are:

    Junior Ladies: Adrienne Mercer, Prince of Wales FSC, Lelia

      Hutton, Prince of Wales FSC, Janice Hynes, Polaris FSC.

    Novice Ladies: Janelle Dinn, St. John's FSC (winner of the

      Sunlife Award of Merit at the Sunlife Sectional Championships), Jodi Frye, Polaris FSC, Kristina Dooling Mount Pearl FSC (winner of the Travel Management Award for least deductions in a technical program, Lori Brett Mount Pearl FSC.

    Novice Man: Stefan Dean St. John's FSC. Pre-Novice Ladies: Carla Ryan Conception Bay South FSC, Deanne

      Leonard St. John's FSC (winner of the Polaris Cup for the Most Artistic Performance), Virginia Toombs Prince of Wales FSC, Heather Dawe Conception Bay North FSC.

    Pre-Novice Men: Mark Spurrell Prince of Wales FSC, Thomas

      Hawkins Silver Jets FSC, Neal Thorne Trinity- Placentia FSC, Nicholas Gibbs Polaris FSC.

    Pre-Novice Dance: Lindsay Hillier and Nicholas Gibbs, Polaris

      FSC.

The skaters hit the ice at 7 a.m. Thursday for first practice start and go through to 11 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Three ice surfaces necessary to accommodate the official practices will be in use from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on each of the four days. The two ice surfaces at the Dartmouth Sportsplex will be the main venues with Cole Harbour Place providing the third rink.

Competition will take place in all disciplines, namely, Singles, Pairs and Dance in the Pre-Novice, Novice, Junior and Senior categories.

An estimated 150 skaters will take part in this qualifying competition which will see top placing skaters proceed to the Bank of Montreal Canadians to be held in Vancouver February 3 to 9, 1997.
