Newfoundland wins double crown at Nova Scotia badminton open

Jasmine Wadhwa, Sonu Wadhwa and Annand Irrinki represented Newfoundland at the Nova Scotia Badminton open in Halifax this past weekend (November 22-24), where some 100 of Atlantic Canada's top badminton players met to vie for gold in five events. Jasmine Wadhwa, St. John's, won a double crown.

In the ladies singles finals Wadhwa beat out Kerry McVey of Dartmouth, 2, 5 to win gold. Wadhwa and partner Kim O'Hara of Fredericton beat Valerie Dion and Manan Pitre of Montreal 15-4, 15-11 in ladies doubles to win Wadhwa's second gold of the tournament.

In mixed doubles Wadhwa and her brother Sonu Wadhwa advanced to the quarter-finals, placing them in the top eight of 41 teams. In men's doubles Annand Irrinki and partner T.J. Smith (Fredericton) advanced to the quarter-finals (top eight of 37 teams), and Sonu Wadhwa and partner Joey Scott (Annapolis Valley) made it to the 16-round. In men's singles (57 players) both Sonu Wadhwa and Irrinki advanced to the 16-round.
