Sport Newfoundland and Labrador - 1997 Newfoundland Sectional Figure Skating Championships

The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

The 1997 Newfoundland Sectional Figure Skating Championships will be skated in Labrador City November 8 to 10, as announced by Patricia Clarke, championship chairperson for the Newfoundland and Labrador Figure Skating Association.

Top placing skaters from 12 clubs around the province will compete for the right to represent Newfoundland at the Atlantic Canadian Figure Skating Championship to be held December 5 to 8 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Top placing skaters from Atlantics will proceed to the Bank of Montreal Canadians to be held in Vancouver, February 3 to 9, 1997.

The 1997 Sun Life Newfoundland Sectionals is hosted by the Polaris Figure Skating Club featuring competition in juvenile, pre-novice, novice and junior levels in ladies and mens singles, dance and pairs.

The Sun Life Award of Merit, along with other medals and awards, will be presented at the awards banquet on Saturday, November 9.

This is the eighth year of association with the championship by Sun Life. To Sun Life the partnership is an opportunity to build on their existing skating involvement in the Sun Life Skate Canada International which, this year, unfolds November 6 to 10 in Kitchener, Ontario. This is one of the most prestigious events in the world and this year, as in other years, features top skaters from around the world. Most importantly, Sun Life Skate Canada International provides Canadian skaters with the international competitive experience that is required to take them to Olympic and world competition.

In addition to its commitment to Sun Life Skate Canada International, Sun Life continues to sponsor the National Figure Skating Team, the Canadian Championships and the Sun Life Stars on Ice tour.
