Newfoundlanders honoured at provincial awards banquet Agnes Thistle has been honoured by the Newfoundland and Labrador Figure Skating Association as Judge of the Year. Following a period of 30 years of dedication to the sport in the province, primarily as a judge, Agnes has been chosen as Judge of the Year by the Canadian Figure Skating Association. She will form part of the largest Newfoundland contingent to the Canadian Figure Skating Association annual convention and general meetingbeing held in Halifax, May 23- 25. She will be honoured at the Wittnauer awards banquet on Friday, May 24 at the World Trade and Convention Centre.

Volunteer of the Year, Wayne Sutherland from the St. John's Figure Skating CLub, will also attend the CFSA annual convention and general meeting to be honoured, along with other volunetters from other sections in Canada. From these, one will be chosen as Volunteer of the Year for all of Canada. Sutherland has served the St. John's club in the positions of president, past-president and chairman of the program committee. He is treasurer of the Avalon region and recently elected treasurer of the Newfoundland Association.

Skater of the Year, Katie Kirland, also hails from the St. John's club. This eight year old has been skating since the age of two. At the ripe old age of seven she won a gold medal in preliminary dance event at the provincial championships and took the plaque for the best unison in a dance couple with her partner, Corey Sutherland. She received a silver medal in interclub competition and was a member of the juvenile precision team which took the silver medal at provincial competition in 1995. In 1996 she and Sutherland took the silver in pre-juvenile dance competiion at the provincial competition and silver in regional competition. In addition to her skating involvement she enjoys swimming and enjoys being in the country fishing and hiking with her father, Tony Kirkland.

Sandy Facey was recipient of the section award for her involvement with th Newfoundland Association as secretary, member of the bursary committe, judges committee, Atlantic division committe and head of the monitoring program as set up by the skater development committee. In her mid teens she was a member of the youngjudges club and at 18 she was the youngest chairman of the recretional program in Canada and did that job for five years. She is a novice competitive judge and was vice- chairperson of the Newfoundland Association 1981-82.

Kelly Cribb from the Ice Crystals Figure Skating Club in Marystown is the recipent of the Canskate/Canfigureskate Award for an active instructor who has made a significant contribution to coaching. She has been involved in skating for eight years and heads the amateur coaching program for their club. she assists in the coaching of 21 canskate members and has filled in for the professional coach at test days. She is very dedicated and has made skating her first priority over her involvement in other sports which include softball, volleyball, and female hockey. She is an honour roll student and a recipient of the all round cord in guiding.

Jodi Blundon, also from the Icre Crystals Club, is Coach of the Year for Newfoundland. Over the past two years her direction to the club has culminated in attendance at competitions being increased from seven to 19 participants and in the club receiving the Award for Most Improved Club at regional competition. In addition to holding down a very demanding full time job, she always finds time for skaters to assit in goal setting and provide encouragement.

Barbara Barclay from the Mount Pearl Figure Skating Club is recipient of the Accountant's Award. She became involved in the club in 1984 and took the position of secretary in 1986. In 1988 she was elected secretary of the Avalon region and spent three years in this post before taking over as region director in 1990, a position she still holds today. She was in terclub accountant for the past several years, recently writing her sectional accountants exam.

Geri Trainor, from the St. John's Figure Skating Club, is the recipient of the Elizabeth Swan Memoria Award for contribution to precision skating in the province. She has been on the executive of the club for two years and took on the position of precision co-ordinator for the 95-96 season which encompassed the co-ordinaton of five precision teams. She arranged regular meetings with the team managers and was responsible for fund raising and ensuring all duties were completed on schedule. She attends all executive meetings and program comittee meetings and has been responsible for scheduling all precision team practices. She does all this for the love of the sport.
