Awards to be presented

The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

The Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation will honor its best coaches, administrators and athletes this Saturday evening (May 25) at the Airport Plaza Hotel during its annual awards banquet.

The Brother G.I. Moore Student Athletes of the Year will receive a $750 scholarship each from Newfoundland Power, in addition to the federation's Athlete of the Year ring. The winner of this year's Student Athletes of the Year are Lisa Grant from St. Stephen's, Stephenville and Kirk Bartlett from Glovertown Regional High. Grant was an all round athlete throughout her high school years, competing in soccer, basketball, cross country-running, volleyball, cross country skiing, track and field and softball. She has won numerous sportsmanship and other individual awards at the zone, regional and provincial levels, and is being recruited by five different universities for basketball, soccer, and swimming. In addition to this, Grant has won many academic awards and is heavily involved in many other aspects of her school and community.

Kirk Bartlett is another in a long list of student athletes of the year from Glovertown Regional High . He has also enjoyed success in a variety of sports - badminton, volleyball, basketball, softball and hockey. Undoubtedly his greatest accomplishments have been in the sport of badminton. He has been on provincial gold and silver winning teams and has also won individual gold and silver. He has represented the province at competitions in Toronto, Montreal, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island, once again winning individual events. Because of his leadership qualities he has been honored as captain for hockey, basketball, volleyball and softball teams. The runners up for the Student Athlete of the Year are Hilary Baikie from Lake Melville School of North West River and Karla George from Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Jeremy MacWhirter from St. Stephen's High (Stephenville) and Ryan Michalski from Brother Rice High (St. John's).

The federation sponsors two coaching awards - the Coaching Service Award, awarded for longevity, dedication and success and the Coach of the Year Award for the coach who has had an exceptional year of success. The winner of the Coaching Service Awards is Gordon Fudge from Discovery Collegiate in Bonavista. Fudge has been coaching since 1974-75 when he first coached both boys and girls basketball and has been coaching in the high school system every year since then. Along the way he has had tremendous success not only in basketball, but also in volleyball, badminton, track and field and softball. Fudge has also been active in hosting tournaments for the federation, having hosted regional and provincial competitions. Runners up for the Coaching Service Award are Ed Arnott from Bishops College in St. John's and Terry Mosher from Queen Elizabeth Regional High in Foxtrap.

Terry Mosher is also the winner of the Coach of the Year Award. Mosher's girls volleyball team at Queen Elizabeth have had two incredible years of success, winning the 4A provincial championships in 1994 and 1995. His teams have also won Provincial Volleyfest, St. John's zones and regionals, provincial junior championships, provincial juvenile championships. Mosher has been named head coach of the 1997 Newfoundland and Labrador Female Canada Games Team and six of his players were selected to play and train with the Canada Games training squad. Runners up for the Coach of the Year were basketball coach, Clarence Sutton from Stella Maris in Trepassey and wrestling coach Derek Locke from Templeton Collegiate.

The Honor Award is the most prestigious award given by the High School Athletic Federation to its volunteers. It is presented to an individual who has had made a tremendous contribution to high school athletes over a long period of time. Ed Arnott from Bishops College in St. John's is the winner. Arnott has 23 years as a teacher, coach, official and administrator in high school sports. During his career he has coached volleyball, badminton, softball, track and field and soccer and is currently a Canada Games coach. He has served as athletic director at Bishops College for 18 years and hosted numerous regional and provincial tournaments for the federation. For seven years, Arnott was a member of the provincial executive of the High School Athletic Federation as regional director and during this time was also chairman of the hockey pool committee. The runners up for the Honor Award are James Feltham from Elwood Regional High in Deer Lake and Keith Kelloway from Berney Memorial of Burin.

Winners of the regional recognition awards are Angela MacNeill (Holy Heart of Mary, St. John's), Keith Hollohan (St. Joseph's, Bay de Verde), Linda Miller (Laval High , Placentia), Al Reid (Marystown Central High), Rene Cashin (Carmanville School Complex) Matthew Bennett (Holy Cross, Harbour Breton), Wesley Gosse (St. Peters Academy, Westport) Tom Bartlett (St. Stephen's, Stephenville), Robert Hancock (Mountain Field High, Forteau) and Darryl Feener (Lake Melville High, North West River).
