Annual general meeting of the Newfoundland and Labrador Figure Skating Association was held May 10 and 12

The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

The annual general meeting of the Newfoundland and Labrador Figure Skating Association took place on May 10 to 12, at The Battery Hotel.

At the awards banquet on May 11, it was announced that Agnes Thistle was the recipient of the Judges/Evaluators Award for Newfoundland. In addition, she has been honoured by the Canadian Figure Skating Association as Judge of the Year for Canada. She will travel to the CFSA annual general meeting to be held May 23 to 25, in Halifax where she and Volunteer of the Year, Wayne Sutherland, from the St. John's FSC will be honoured for their contribution to the sport.

Skater of the Year for Newfoundland is eight year old preliminary skater, Katie Kirkland, from the St. John's Figure Skating Club.

The following other awards were presented:

    Section Award - Sandi Facey, Prince of Wales Club
    Accountants Awards - Barbara Barclay, Mount Pearl
    Coaches Award - Jodi Blundon, Ice Crystals, Marystown
    Precision Award - Geri Trainor, St. John's FSC
    Canskate/Canfigure Skate Award - Kelly Ann Cribb, Ice Crystals

Appreciation certificates were presented to the following individuals for past effort on behalf of the Newfoundland association:

    Brenda Lodge - Silver Wings, Bonavista
    Esther Dooling - Mount Pearl, FSC
    Allan Scott - Silver Jets, Gander
    Phonse Leonard and Clare Eagar - St. John's FS Club
    Sandi Facey and Agnes Thistle - Prince of Wales
    Kathy Reid and Marian Tucker - Bell Island

Christine Moores was returned for a second term as chairperson along with Lindsey Redmond who continues on as vice-chairperson and Barbara Predham who will remain as past chairperson. In for first term are Sid Woolfrey from Lewisporte as vice-chairperson, Norma Moores of Conception Bay North as secretary and Wayne Sutherland of St. John's FS Club as treasurer.

Returning as directors-at-large are Betty Brett of Mount Pearl and Judy Mugford from Conception Bay South. In for a first term are Tammy Hawkins from Gander, Jean Trend of Grand Falls-Windsor, Paulette Bugden of Corner Brook and Wayne Vallis of St. John's Figure Skating Club.

Appointed as chairpersons of committees are the following:

    Accountants - John Dollimount, Stephenville
    Evaluators/Judges - Madeline Hillier, Labrador
    Precision - Odelle Pike, Stephenville
    Competitions - Patricia Clarke, CBN
    Recreation - Sid Woolfrey, Lewisporte
    Coaches - Kevin Walsh, Mount Pearl

The region directors are as follows:

    Avalon - Barb Barclay
    Labrador - Bev Power
    Western - Odelle Pike
    Eastern - Roland Dawe
    Central - Joyce Martin-Stuckless

Patricia Clarke, chairperson of the championship committee, announced the awarding of the following competitions:

    SunLife Sectionals - November 9, 10 and 11, 1996 Labrador City
    Precision - February 15 and 16, 1997, CBN
    Central Dairies/ Tropicanna - Provincial - Gander
    February 27, 28 and March 1, 1997

Regional competitions will be held as follows:

    Central - Springdale, January 11 and 12, 1997
    Western - Corner Brook, January 18 and 19, 1997
    Avalon - Mount Pearl, January 25, 1997
    Labrador - Wabush, February 1, 1997
    Eastern - Bonavista, February 1, 1997

National precision championship will be held March 5 - 9, 1997 in Halifax.

Atlantic Canadians will be held December 5, 6 and 7, 1996 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

A new lottery committee under chairperson Jean Trend has been established to look after raising funds for a new executive director who is being sought for the upcoming skating season.
