May 17, 1996 (Tourism, Culture and Recreation) The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland
and Labrador: At the awards banquet on May 11, it was announced that Agnes Thistle was the recipient of the Judges/Evaluators Award for Newfoundland. In addition, she has been honoured by the Canadian Figure Skating Association as Judge of the Year for Canada. She will travel to the CFSA annual general meeting to be held May 23 to 25, in Halifax where she and Volunteer of the Year, Wayne Sutherland, from the St. John's FSC will be honoured for their contribution to the sport. Skater of the Year for Newfoundland is eight year old preliminary skater, Katie Kirkland, from the St. John's Figure Skating Club. The following other awards were presented:
Accountants Awards - Barbara Barclay, Mount Pearl Coaches Award - Jodi Blundon, Ice Crystals, Marystown Precision Award - Geri Trainor, St. John's FSC Canskate/Canfigure Skate Award - Kelly Ann Cribb, Ice Crystals
Esther Dooling - Mount Pearl, FSC Allan Scott - Silver Jets, Gander Phonse Leonard and Clare Eagar - St. John's FS Club Sandi Facey and Agnes Thistle - Prince of Wales Kathy Reid and Marian Tucker - Bell Island
Returning as directors-at-large are Betty Brett of Mount Pearl and Judy Mugford from Conception Bay South. In for a first term are Tammy Hawkins from Gander, Jean Trend of Grand Falls-Windsor, Paulette Bugden of Corner Brook and Wayne Vallis of St. John's Figure Skating Club. A new lottery committee under chairperson Jean Trend has been established to look after raising funds for a new executive director who is being sought for the upcoming skating season.
