Sport Newfoundland and Labrador- Volleyball teams take part in national championships

The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

The 1996 Eastern Canadian Senior Mens and Womens Volleyball Championships will take place May 10, 11 and 12 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Newfoundland will be represented by four teams. In the mens draw the Guards from St. John's and Pasadena will be competing while in the womens draw, two teams from St. John's will be competing, Hickmans and Trapper John's.

The Guards who won this year's provincial championships going undefeated earning the right to attend the Eastern Canadian are hoping to improve on their second place finish in last year's Eastern Canadian Senior Championships. The team will be led by provincial championship MVP Rex Hillier and provincial all-star and Memorial University player Paul Melanson. The other teams in their draw at the Eastern Canadian are two teams from the host New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Quebec. Pasadena also expect to fair well with the addition of former Memorial standout Tim Fifield added to the roster and Dalhousie player Ronnie Birmingham. Teams in their division are, two teams from the host New Brunswick, Ontario and Nova Scotia.

In the womens draw Newfoundland will be represented by the provincial senior championships runners up Hickman's, who will be led by provincial all-star Naomi Murphy and Memorial player Jennifer Earl, who was added to the line up for the Eastern Canadian Championship. The other teams in their pool are two teams from New Brunswick, Ontario and Nova Scotia. The other Newfoundland team in the womens draw is Trapper John's who finished third at the provincial championships and will be led by provincial championship all-star Danielle Walters. Teams in their pool are two New Brunswick teams, Ontario, Nova Scotia and the Canadian Forces team.

The Loopers Volleyball Club is also travelling this weekend to Winnipeg to play in the National Juvenile Championship. The team earned the right by winning the Pepsi Provincial Championship on March 9. The team is expecting a good performance with five players on the team who are members of the 1997 Canada Games training squad, Mark Flynn, Stevie Lane, Justin Dominic, Rod Butler and Davey Guy. Other members of the team are, Shannon Pinsent, Steven Burt and Roger Butler. In their division the team will have to play, Saskatchewan, Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba.
