Yvonne Jefford, president of the Conception Bay South Figure Skating Club, and Joe Gregory, facilities manager, Department of Parks and Recreation with the town of Conception Bay South have announced a joint celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Figure Skating Club and the CBS arena in Conception Bay South.

This year, two of Canada's top figure skaters will perform at the ice show to bring to conclusion the 20th skating season.

Michel Brunet and Chantal Lefebvre, silver medallists in senior dance at the 1996 Royal Bank Canadian Figure Skating Championships, will perform on March 30 at 3 p.m. at CBS arena. These skaters are part of Canada's representatives to the World Championships in Edmonton March 19 to 24, 1996.

Michel Brunet, 25 years old, was born in Hull, Quebec and resides in Gatineau. He was novice dance champion of Canada in 1987 with Bridgitte Richer, his partner for five years. He then skated with Jennifer Boyce which culminated in a silver medal in senior dance at the 1995 Canadians.

Chantal Lefebvre, is 18 years of age and was born in Montreal. She is a member of the Club de Patinage Artistique de LaSalle where she resides and studies human sciences. She had skated competively with Patrice Lauzon until July of 1995 when the couple parted ways.

Chantal and Michel have skated together since August of 1995. They have made remarkable progress with their training which is indicative of their individual talent.

They have been training under the expert guidance of Josee Picard and Eric Gillies (with assistance from Julia Marcotte - choreographer) at the Boucherville Centre for high performance (just south of Montreal) and previous training ground for gold medallists, Victor Kraatz and Shae-Lynn Bourne). Chantal and Michel train, as well, under Eric Loukes at the Minto Skating Club in Ottawa.

Brunet and Lefebvre will also participate in a high level dance partnering session on Friday, March 29 at the CBS arena. Skaters from the Conception Bay South Figure Skating Club will be tested in gold and senior silver dances under the Canadian Figure Skating Association System of Testing.

The Conception Bay South Figure Skating Club was formed on October 24, 1976 when 150 skaters registered for the learn to skate program under professional instructor, Alan Davidson. He later went on to hold the job of technical director for figure skating for the province.

The charter members of the CBS club included Rhonda Raymond/president; Wanda Perrin/vice-president; Winnie Abbott/secretary and Sandra Squires/treasurer. The coordinator for the Avalon Region was Barbara Ryan (who went on to become the president of the Canadian Figure Skating Association).

The club, a member of the Canadian Figure Skating Association, has provided instruction to thousands of people of all ages in and near Conception Bay South through the CanSkate program devised by the CFSA.

Through the 1995-1996 skating season, CBS skaters accumulated 10 gold , 11 silver and 15 bronze medals in competitions including three gold, two silver and three bronze medals in provincials.

The ice show entitled "Thanks for the Memories" is a trip down memory lane and includes individual performances by the club's top skaters. Carla Ryan, silver medallist at SunLife Sectionals, gold and bronze medallist at provincials and recipient of the E.C. "Ted" Withers Memorial Award for the Most Outstanding Performance at the provincials will also be featured.

Tickets for the show are on sale at Irving stations in CBS, Mount Pearl, St. John's, Torbay, Harbour Grace and Bay Roberts. Seating is limited and tickets sell for $6.
