Provincial High School Hockey Championships


The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Two provincial high school hockey championships will be decided this coming weekend as the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation hockey season winds down.

Eight teams are vying for the championship banner in the 3A tournament. Cape John Collegiate in LaScie is the host. Games will also be held in Baie Verte. Playing at the LaScie Arena will be the host, Lester Pearson High of Wesleyville, Berney High from Burin and Bishop O'Neill Collegiate from Brigus. Games get underway at 1 p.m. Thursday and continue until 10 p.m. Games are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday followed by a skills competition and banquet. Competing in the second division will be Beothuck Collegiate from Baie Verte, Baltimore High from Ferryland, Ralph Laite Collegiate from Lewisporte and St. Augustines High from Plum Point.

Winners of the 4A provincial championships will receive the championship banner as well as the coveted and prestigious Boyle Trophy. Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts is the host school for the event. Division I will consist of Ascension Astros, Gander Concordes, Grand Falls Gryphons and Beaconsfield Saxons. Vying for top spot in Division II will be Clarenville Cougars, Prince of Wales Cavaliers, Roncalli Cardinals and St. Stephens Spartans. Games get underway 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Bay Arena and continue through the day with the last game scheduled for 8 p.m. Seven round robin games will be played on Friday. The top two teams from each division will meet in the semi- finals 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday. The championship game will go at 7:30 p.m.

One player from each tournament will be awarded the Keyin Sportsmanship award.
