Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation Seeking nominations for federation awards

The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Nominations are now being accepted for the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation Annual Awards. Five awards are presented each year at the federation's banquet, held in conjunction with their annual general meeting.

The Honor Award is presented to a coach, official or administrator working at either the zone, regional or provincial level in recognition of outstanding service to high school athletics. Last year's recipient was Joe Devereaux from Gander.

Two awards are available for high school coaches. The Coach of the Year Award is reserved for the coach who enjoys an exceptional year based on accomplishments, sportsmanship and dedication to success. The Coaching Service Award is intended for the coach who has a long history of involvement in high school sports and recognizes a strong developmental program and commitment to the total development of student athletes. Cyril Simmons from Harbour Grace was the recipient of both these awards in 1995.

The Brother G.I. Moore, Male and Female Student Athletes of the Year are the highest athletic honour given high school student-athletes in the federation. Newfoundland Power sponsors these awards by supplying $750 scholarships to each student-athlete of the year. They are presented to a student-athlete who has best exemplified the ideals of sportsmanship and excellence in their high school sports careers. The recipient should combine athletic prowess with academic excellence in such a way as to produce those qualities which best portray the objectives of our educational system. Last year's recipients were Cheryl Etchegary from St. Lawrence Central High and Wayne Francis from Berney Memorial.

Nomination forms must be endorsed by a member school, zone or region and are available at schools throughout the province or at the federation office. Deadline for nominations for all awards is April 15.
