Volleyball association to host senior eastern open, St. John's


The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

The Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association will be hosting the men's and women's Senior Eastern Open this weekend February 23-24 in St. John's, with nine teams in each category.

The men's division A will play at Cabot College featuring Don Cherry's who have captured the western and central opens already this year; Strikers from St. John's; Onca, Pasadena and Striker's from Marystown.

Division B will play at Macdonald Drive Junior High. The teams are Blarney Stone, Thieves, Marine Institute and Conne River. The Women's tournament will all be played at the Torbay Recreation Centre. Division A will feature Trapper's, Cabot Institute, Canada Games White who already have a gold and silver in the western and central opens this year, Gander YQX and Grenfell College. In Division B the teams are Sherlock's, Hickman's, New World Fitness and Canada Games Red who have also captured gold and silver this year in the central and western opens.

All teams are using this tournament to prepare for the senior provincial championships that will be held in Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor on March 15-16, 1996. Play will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with the playoffs scheduled to start on Saturday at 3 p.m.
