Sport Newfoundland and Labrador - 1996 Provincial Figure Skating Championships

The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Competition concluded Saturday at the Central Dairies-Tropicana 1996 Provincial Figure Skating Championships at the Glacier in Mount Pearl.

On hand for the medal presentations were Premier Brian Tobin; MHA, Neil Windsor; acting mayor of the City of Mount Pearl Dave Denine; Christine Moores (President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Figure Skating Association) and other officials and sponsors of the event.

The Pound Region Trophy for the region accumulating the most points at the competition went to the Avalon Region.

The Chapman Club Trophy for the club accumulating the highest points was presented to the Prince of Wales Figure Skating Club.

The Allan Davidson Award for the Most Improved Club went to Silver Wings Figure Skating Club in Bonavista.

The E.C. "Ted" Withers Memorial Award, a new award this year, for the Most Outstanding Performance at the competition was awarded to Carla Ryan of the Conception Bay South Figure Skating Club.

The Alex Balisch Trophy for the Most Artistic Performance was won by Lelia Hutton from the Prince of Wales Figure Skating Club.

The Campbell Soup Award for the Least Deductions in a Short Program went to Ashlee Daley from the host Mount Pearl club.

The trophy for the best unison in a dance event went to the Juvenile Dance Couple of Heather Dawe (CBN) and Stefan Jonasson (Prince of Wales).

LADIES EVENTS

In the Pre Novice Ladies Free Skate, Carla Ryan (Conception Bay South) took the gold medal, while Ashlee Daley (of host Mount Pearl Club) got the silver and Deanne Leonard (St. John's FSC) took the bronze.

In the Open Ladies A, Sara Houlihan of Southern Shore took the top spot, Melissa Norris (Prince of Wales) finished second and Melanie Lake (Northern Dawn, Churchill Falls) was third.

In the Open Ladies B, Kerry Brown from Snowflake (Happy Valley- Goose Bay) was first, Jeanette Park (Silver Blades, Corner Brook) was second and Andrea Walsh (Conception Bay South) finished in third.

In Chester Dawe Juvenile Ladies A, Anne Jefford (Conception Bay South FSC) took the gold medal, Cyra Belbin (Prince of Wales) got the silver and Shauna Mercer (host Mount Pearl Club) skated to the bronze.

In Juvenile Ladies B, Jillian Ryan (Stephenville FSC) took the gold medal, Krysta Noseworthy (Silver Blades, Corner Brook) got the silver and Stephanie Maher, (Polaris FSC, Labrador City) got the bronze.

In the Juvenile Ladies C category, the gold medal has gone to the French island of St. Pierre based on the golden skating of Patricia Drake, Starr King (Stephenville FSC) got the silver and Krista Thompson (Fallsview FSC, Bishop Falls) took the bronze.

In the Robinson-Blackmore Pre-Juvenile Ladies C category, the gold medal has gone to the French island of St. Pierre based on the golden skating of Florence Michel, Jane Hopkins (Island Blades, Hillgrade) got the silver and Jane Marie Davis (Silver Blades, Corner Brook) too the bronze.

In the Pitney Bowes Preliminary Ladies A, Aimee Collier of the host Mount Pearl club skated away with the gold medal, Shannon Morrison from Conception Bay South took the silver and Kyleigh Woods, Silver Blades, Corner Brook got the bronze.

In the Preliminary Ladies B, Jessica Pike (Silver Blades, Corner Brook) skated away with the gold medal. Sonia Fouchard of St. Pierre took the silver and her teammate, Melanie Arrossanena, got the bronze.

In the Preliminary Ladies C, Julia Collier of the host Mount Pearl club got the gold medal, Stephanie Simmons (Silver Blades FSC, Corner Brook) got the silver and Terra Fewer (Ice Crystals FSC) took the bronze.

In the Pre-Juvenile Ladies A, Virginia Toombs of Prince of Wales FSC turned in the gold performance while teammate Meghan Fleming took the silver and Leah Forsey of Mount Pearl ended up in third place.

In the Pre-Juvenile Ladies B, Jacinta Kennedy of the host Mount Pearl club skated to a gold medal, Jada Ruttgaizer of Seaport Skaters (Botwood) got the silver and Erica Champion (Fallsview Bishop Falls) skated to the bronze.

MENS EVENTS

In the Pre-Novice Mens Free Skate, Mark Spurrell of Prince of Wales skated to the gold medal and Nicholas Gibbs of Polaris FSC, Labrador City took the silver.

In the Open Mens A, Thomas Hawkins (Silver Jets, Gander) skated to the gold and Paul Sibley (Seaport Skaters, Botwood) took the silver.

In the Pre-Juvenile Mens A, Corey Sutherland (St. John's FSC) got the top spot, Christopher Downton (Silver Jets, Gander) was second and Sam Roberts (Prince of Wales) was third.

In the Pre-Juvenile Mens B and C, Michael Sibley (Seaport Skaters, Botwood) got the gold, Patrick Hibbitts (Silver Blades, Corner Brook) won silver and Ben Stokes (Prince of Wales) took the bronze.

In the Preliminary Mens A, Matthew Lawlor (Silver Wings, Bonavista) skated to the gold and Christopher Walsh (host Mount Pearl Club) took the silver.

In the Preliminary Mens B, Adam Morrison (Conception Bay South) got the gold and Sebastien Gordy (St. Pierre) took the silver.

In the Preliminary Mens C, John Smith (Silver Blades, Corner Brook) turned in the gold medal performance, Matthew Grant (Silver Blades) skated to the silver and Michael Jackman (Southern Shore) got the bronze.

DANCE EVENTS

In Juvenile Dance, Heather Dawe (Conception Bay North) and partner Stefan Jonasson (Prince of Wales) skated to gold, Cyra Belbin and Sam Roberts (Prince of Wales) got the silver and Angela Park and Patrick Hibbitts (Silver Blades, Corner Brook) took the bronze.

In Pre-Juvenile Dance, Jessica Pike and John Smith (Silver Blades, Corner Brook) took the top spot while St. John's FSC skaters Katie Kirkland and Corey Sutherland beat out their sister and brother teammates Krista Kirkland and Ryan Sutherland to take the silver and bronze respectively.

Medal presentations took place at 8 p.m. Saturday, February 3, at the Glacier.
