Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Figure skating championships

The following is being distributed at the request Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Five events have been finalized at the Central Dairies-Tropicana 1996 Provincial Figure Skating Championships being skated at the Glacier in Mount Pearl.

In the Mr. Sub Novice Ladies Short Program, Lori Brett of Mount Pearl FSC took the gold while teammate Kristina Dooley got the silver, and Amanda Conway of Conception Bay South took the bronze.

In the Pre-Novice Ladies Short Program, Ashlee Daley from host Mount Pearl club finished in first place, Deanne Leonard of St. John's FSC was second and Carla Ryan of Conception Bay South was third.

In Juvenile Mens A, Neal Thorne of Trinity Placentia ended up in first place while Aren Jonasson and brother and teammate Stefan Jonasson of Prince of Wales were second and third respectively.

In the 10Fox Variation Dance, Heather Dawe (Conception Bay North) and partner, Stefan Jonasson (Prince of Wales) took the top spot, Giselle Belbin/Ben Stokes, both from Prince of Wales were next and Gisella's sister Cyra Belbin and her partner Sam Roberts (both from Prince of Wales) followed with the third spot.

In Preliminary Dance, Katie Wadden (Prince of Wales) and Christopher Walsh (from host Mount Pearl) dominated the event to take the first place, brother and sister Shannon and Adam Morrison from Conception Bay South were second and Heather Anstey and Matthew Grant (Silver Blades, Corner Brook) ended up in third.

Practices continue Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. Competition will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Preliminary Ladies A and C, Pre- Juvenile Ladies A and B, Juvenile Ladies B and C, Open Bronze Rhythm and Open Ladies B Short Program.

Competition picks up Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and runs to 8 p.m. in Preliminary Ladies B, Preliminary Men, A, B and C, Pre-Juvenile Men A, B and C, Pre-Juvenile Ladies C, Pre-Juvenile Dance, Juvenile Ladies A, Juvenile Dance, Pre-Novice Men and Ladies Singles, Open Men A, Open Ladies A, Open Ladies B Long Program and Open Dance.

Medal presentations will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Glacier.
