Sport Newfoundland and Labrador - Avalon Regional Figure Skating Championships

The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Prince of Wales Figure Skating Club was awarded the Avalon Region Trophy for the most total points at the 1996 Avalon Regional Figure Skating Championships held last weekend at Southern Shore Arena. St. Pierre Figure Skating Club took the trophy for the Most Improved Club. Sharon Houlihan from the host Southern Breakers Club was the recipient of the Mini Balisch Trophy for the Most Artistic Performance.

Ashlee Daley, Mount Pearl Figure Skating Club took the gold medal in the Pre-Novice Ladies Short Program. Deanne Leonard, St. John's FSC took the silver and Carla Ryan, Conception Bay South FSC got the bronze.

In the Pre-Novice Ladies Free Skate Carla Ryan, CBS, skated to the gold with Ashlee Daley taking the silver and Deanne Leonard getting the bronze.

In the Open Ladies A, Danika Drover of Prince of Wales got the gold, Melissa Norris of Prince of Wales took the silver and Kimberly Parsons of CBS got the bronze.

In Juvenile Ladies A, Shauna Mercer of Mount Pearl skated to top honours, followed by Cyra Belbin, Prince of Wales, and Annie Jefford, CBS.

In Juvenile Ladies B, Krista Ivany, Mount Pearl beat out Christie Auchinleck, St. John's and Bobbi Jo Dunphy, CBS.

St. Pierre skater, Patricia Drake took the top place in the Juvenile Ladies C, Krista Bragg of Bell Island was 2nd and Heather Forsey of Prince of Wales finished in 3rd.

In Pre-Juvenile Ladies A, Virginia Toombs, Prince of Wales finished on top followed by Megan Fleming, Prince of Wales and Leah Forsey, Mount Pearl.

Clelia Calvori of St. Pierre finished on top in the Pre-Juvenile Ladies B, while Jacinta Kennedy of Mount Pearl and Amanda Bishop of Conception Bay South took 2nd and 3rd spot.

In Pre-Juvenile Ladies C, Florence Michel, St. Pierre got the gold medal, Tanya Harding, Mount Pearl took the silver and Sheena Gollop, Mount Pearl go the bronze.

In Preliminary Ladies A, Aimee Collier, Mount Pearl took the gold medal, Shannon Morrison, CBS got the silver and Laura Crosbie, St. John's took the bronze.

In Preliminary Ladies B, Melanie Arrossamena of St. Pierre finished in top spot. Kayla Nugent from CBS was second and Sonia Fouchard of St. Pierre was third.

In Preliminary Ladies C, Julia Collier of Mount Pearl took the gold, and Nancy Bonnieul and Helena Dearborn of St. Pierre followed with the silver and bronze.

MENS EVENTS

Aren Jonasson, Prince of Wales, took top spot from brother and club mate, Stefan Jonasson, while Ryan Sutherland, St. John's Club, was 3rd in the Juvenille Mens A category.

Corey Sutherland, St. John's, finished with the gold in the Pre- Juvenile Men, while Ben Stokes and Sam Roberts of Prince of Wales took silver and bronze.

In Preliminary Mens B/C, Sebastien Gordy, of St. Pierre FSC finished in first, Adam Morrison of CBS was second and Michael Jackman of the host club took third.

Mark Spurrell, Prince of Wales, will receive a participation award and skate at provincials in the Pre-Novice Men Short Program and the Pre-Novice Men Free Skate.

DANCE EVENTS

In Juvenile Dance, Heather Dawe, CBN and Stefan Jonasson, Prince of Wales took the gold medal, Cyra Belbin and Sam Roberts, Prince of Wales got the silver and Giselle Belbin and Ben Stokes of Prince of Wales took the bronze.

In Pre-Juvenile Dance, Krista Kirkland and Ryan Sutherland beat out sister and brother Katie Kirkland and Corey Sutherland all of St. John's to take the gold and silver, followed by Nicole Templeman, Mount Pearl and Neil Thorne, Trinity-Placentia who took the bronze.

In Preliminary Dance, Shannon Morrison and Adam Morrison from Conception Bay South skated to a gold, Jennifer Reddick and Michael Jackman from the host club got the silver and Katie Wadden and Christopher Walsh, Prince of Wales and Mount Pearl respectively followed with the bronze.

These skaters will represent the Avalon Region at the 1996 Central Dairies Tropicanna Provincial Championship to be skated in Mount Pearl, February 1 to 3.
