Government puts Marble Mountain privatization initiative on hold

Paul Dicks, Minister of Finance and Treasury Board, and Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced at a news conference in Corner Brook today that government has decided not to continue with a privatization process for Marble Mountain at this time. The ministers said that the privatization process has demonstrated that this is not the appropriate time nor the appropriate economic environment for government to divest itself of the ski facility.

Government is appointing Marble Mountain Management Corporation as the new General Manager of Marble Mountain with full responsibilities for the day-to-day management of the ski hill. Marble Mountain Development Corporation's Board of Directors will retain responsibility for long-term management and development opportunities for the hill.

Mr. Dicks said: "The Marble Mountain Ski Facility will be brought to operational status as soon as possible. Government has made a significant investment in developing Marble Mountain into a quality resort. I am confirming today that government believes that Marble Mountain is a viable business venture, and I am pleased to say that the ski hill is open for business."

The minister also announced that responsibility for the management of government's Marble Mountain investment portfolio is transferred to the Department of Finance, effective immediately, with the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation maintaining responsibility for promoting the facility as an important component of the province's overall tourism product. Mr. Dicks said he expects the relationship between the Department of Finance and the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation will prove beneficial for the day-to-day management and long- term viability of the hill.

Both ministers said that with the appointment of the general manager whose responsibility is to find efficiencies in the system and develop better and more innovative ways of managing the ski hill, government is confident that Marble Mountain will continue to be a tourism generator for the province, and provide a quality recreational experience for all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.
