Labatt Breweries Newfoundland becomes first corporate sponsor for John Cabot Celebrations

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced in Bonavista Labatt Breweries Newfoundland will be a major corporate sponsor for the Cabot Celebrations' Matthew event.

"The Cabot Celebrations Team is responsible for raising $500,000 in revenue to supplement provincial funding of $5 million," Ms. Kelly said. "Packages have been developed to attract a total of between seven and 10 major corporate sponsors which would gain explicit rights to specific anchor events."

Labatt Breweries Newfoundland will be one of the three major sponsors of the Matthew Visit. Two additional corporate sponsors for the Matthew Visit are currently being negotiated and are expected to be announced next month.

Labatt Breweries Newfoundland is proud to be a partner in Newfoundland and Labrador's Cabot Celebrations next year," Ron Steeves, director of business development, Labatt Breweries of Canada said. "Labatt believes that the Cabot Celebrations will provide the province with valuable economic opportunities while strengthening the province's tourism industry. Labatt supports and promotes progress," Mr. Steeves said. "This is a progressive initiative and one which will benefit all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."

In addition to being a major corporate sponsor of the Matthew visit, Labatt Breweries Newfoundland will also become the exclusive brewery for the pouring and promotion of beer and beer products within all designated event areas controlled by the Cabot Celebrations and associated with the Matthew Visit, including each of the 17 ports of call. Also included are the designated event areas associated with the following anchor events for the Cabot Celebrations: Festival 500 Sharing the Voices, the International Summit of the Sea, and the Cabot and His World Symposium.

"Labatt Breweries Newfoundland will make a very significant contribution in cash toward the overall Cabot Celebrations corporate sponsorship requirement of $500,000," Ms. Kelly said. "In addition, Labatt Breweries Newfoundland is giving a substantial in-kind contribution which will provide pivotal infrastructure and services in support of the Matthew Visit. These details will be released once they are finalized."

Labatts impressive contribution is critical to ensuring that the Cabot 500th Anniversary Celebrations achieves its goals of stimulating the tourism industry, focusing attention on Newfoundland and Labrador as a tourist destination and celebrating the province's unique heritage.
