New Fee Structure for Provincial Parks

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism Culture and Recreation, today announced changes to provincial parks' fees. The changes include a reduction in camping fees and the introduction of a vehicle fee.

"Parks' users asked government to re-examine the fee structure that was introduced earlier this year," Ms. Kelly said. "Users voiced their preference for a reduced camping fee and offset the cost with a new vehicle entry fee."

The revised fee structure for unserviced camping sites includes a new 10 per cent weekly discount, 15 per cent monthly discount and 20 per cent seasonal discount on the $8 per night basic fee. Partially serviced camping sites will now be discounted 10 per cent weekly, 15 per cent monthly and 20 per cent seasonally on the $10 per night basic fee which was previously $12 per night. Fully serviced camping sites will also be discounted 10 per cent weekly, 15 per cent monthly and 20 per cent seasonally on the $15 per night basic fee.

"Over the past several years, government has spent tens of thousands of dollars upgrading the quality of the province's parks," Ms. Kelly said. "Initially, government intended to recuperate some of those costs by increasing camping fees. A more equitable solution, however, will be in effect this year with the introduction of a $3 per day or $15 per season vehicle entry fee."

In evaluating the cost-saving, a 109-day seasonal pass to Barachois Park which previously cost campers $1,308 will cost $872 this year. This represents a cost-saving of $436 to the seasonal park user. Trailer storage and boat hire fees will remain unchanged.
