Provincial boys basketball championships

The first four of eight scheduled provincial high school basketball championships are being contested this coming weekend. Thirty-seven boys teams will compete for the provincial banners.

The A tournament is the largest of the four, and will feature 12 teams playing in a three division format, hosted by St. Joseph's in Bay de Verde. Division A will have Fatima Academy, Deer Lake Pentecostal School, Whitbourne High and Northern Bay playing off. Division B will see action from St. Joseph's, Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), St. Michaels (Bell Island) and John Watkins Academy (Hermitage). Rounding out the field in Division C will be St. Michael's (Arnolds Cove), St. Lawrence Central High, St. Augustines (Plum Point) and Our Lady of Lourdes. Round robin play gets underway Thursday at 12 noon and continues through until Saturday with the championship game scheduled for 3 p.m.

St. Catherines Academy in Mount Carmel is the host for the 2A event. Ten teams are registered in the tournament. The Red Division will consist of St. Catherines, Vaters Collegiate (St. John's), Musgravetown High, Pasadena Academy and Glovertwon Regional High. The Blue Division will have Grandy's River Collegiate (Burnt Islands), Botwood Collegiate, Holy Name of Mary Academy (Lawn), St. Annes (Dunville) and Holy Trinity (Heart's Content) vying for top honors. The tournament starts Wednesday at 4 p.m. The championship game will be played Saturday at 3 p.m.

St. Francis in Harbour Grace will host eight teams in the 3A provincial championships. Division I will feature the host, St. Francis, Holy Spirit (Manuels), Labrador City Collegiate and Pearce Regional High (Burin). Division 2 will feature Laval High (Placentia), Bursey Memorial (Grand Falls-Windsor), Fogo Island Central High and St. James High (Port aux Basques). Play gets under way Thursday at 11 a.m. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 7:30 Thursday evening. The championship game will be played Saturday afternoon.

The 4A boys tournament will be an eight team, two division tournament hosted by Stella Maris High in Trepassey. In the Blue Division, Brother Rice High (St. John's), Elwood Regional High, Mount Pearl Sr. High and Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook) playing off. In the Gold Division, Holy Heart of Mary (St. John's), Regina High (Corner Brook), Stella Maris High and Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts) vying for the two playoff spots. The tournament gets under way 12 noon on Thursday. The championship game will be played 4 p.m. Saturday.

Championship banners will be presented to each winning team along with gold medals. Foul shooting awards will be given to one individual from each tournament who wins the separate foul shooting competition. Keyin Technical College, sponsor of the federation, will present Keyin Sportsmanship Awards.
