Opening of the Mabey Universal Bridge, Millertown

Dr. Rex Gibbons, Minister of Natural Resources, is pleased to announce the opening of the Mabey Universal Bridge at Millertown. It's the biggest clear span bridge of its type in North America and it's built on the Exploits River. The construction of this bridge ensures access to the back country by outfitters, wood harvesters, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Abitibi-Price workers, as well as outdoor enthusiasts encouraged to enjoy the Millertown area which has been billed as the 'Hunting and Fishing Capital of Newfoundland'.

Historically, back country access was available to these people via the roadway over the existing dam structure. However, an assessment by Acres International Limited stated that future use of the dam for anything other than a water control structure could adversely affect its structural integrity in the long term, especially if used by loaded wood trucks or other vehicles of similar loadings. Thus Abitibi-Price, the Department of Natural Resources and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, agreed to cost-share the construction of the new 270 foot clear span bailey bridge.

The bridge was provided by Mabey Bridge Inc. of Baltimore at an approximate cost of just over $600,000, and the contract for construction, valued at $172,850 was awarded to Trident Construction of St. John's. The overall total cost of the project was $1.04 million.
