New Caribou Hunting Zone Established and Opened
for Hunting in Labrador
Dr. Rex Gibbons, Minister of Natural Resources, announced
today that a new caribou zone (Grand Lake Caribou Zone) has been
established and is opened for hunting, effective immediately. The
minister noted that the new zone, generally, is bounded in the
west and south by the lower part of the Naskaupi River and
southern shore of Grand Lake above Cape Caribou and in the east,
on a line from Cape Caribou to Mokami Hill and beyond. Hunters
are advised to obtain a detailed description of the zone from the
Regional Wildlife Officer at Happy Valley/Goose Bay (709)
896-2732, before engaging in the hunt. Dr. Gibbons advised that
the new zone was established in response to an apparent shift
this winter in distribution of the George River caribou herd.
Large numbers of the herd now occupy the new Grand Lake Caribou
Zone, well south and east of the normal winter distribution
pattern. Wildlife staff will continue to monitor the movement of
the George River caribou herd and hunters are advised that
additional areas may be created and/or opened as the herd
migration continues and closed as appropriate. The minister is
pleased to offer the additional hunting opportunities.
