(Municipal and Provincial Affairs)

The following statement was issued today by Art Reid, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs. It was also read in the House of Assembly:

As minister responsible for local government and, on behalf of all Members of the House of Assembly, I wish to offer our congratulations to the new council elected Tuesday night in the Town of Conception Bay South and also to extend our best wishes for every success during their tenure of office.

I believe the decision to cause a new election to be held was one that was in the overall best interest of the residents of Conception Bay South and it means that the town can once again take ownership of its own affairs.

The new council will remain in office for a five-year period.

Officials of my department are already making plans to provide extensive training for the new council with respect to procedures and budget preparation, etc., and my department will provide whatever help and assistance that may be required by the new council.

I was pleased to see that 37 people came forward to offer themselves for election and that there was a high turnout of voters. It does serve to indicate that there is considerable interest in local government affairs in this province.

Government is very cognizant and appreciative of the significant contribution that men and women - volunteers for the most part - make to local government throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
