Results of judicial inquiry into circumstances surrounding death of Stephen Gerald Robertson

The Department of Justice today released the results of the judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Stephen Gerald Robertson. Mr. Robertson died as a result of a tragic traffic accident near Corner Brook on June 16, 1994.

The presiding inquiry judge, His Honour Chief Judge Donald Luther has recommended the following:

  1. Seasonal signs should be erected in this area of the Trans Canada Highway on both sides advising the public of the presence of cyclists.
  2. The province should consider regulations for cyclists using the Trans Canada Highway and other high-speed routes. These regulations should include the following subject areas:
    • (a) age;
      (b) clothing and equipment;
      (c) licensing and safe driving courses for residents.
  3. The yield sign at the exit ramp in the location of this mishap is meaningless and should be replaced by a general caution sign.
