Queen's Counsel Appointments
Edward Roberts, QC, Minister of Justice and Attorney General
for Newfoundland and Labrador, is pleased to announce the
Lieutenant- Governor in Council has appointed three lawyers as
Queen's Counsel.
The new Queen's Counsel are: George J. Furey, Augustus G.
Lilly and B. Gale Welsh.
George J. Furey graduated from Memorial University of
Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1970,
a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 and a Masters degree in
Education in 1976. Mr. Furey spent 10 years as a teacher and
principal in Newfoundland until he entered Dalhousie University
as a law student. He graduated from Dalhousie with a Bachelor of
Laws degree in 1983 and was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in
1984. Mr. Furey is a senior partner with the law firm of O'Brien,
Furey, Smith.
Augustus G. Lilly graduated from Memorial University of
Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in 1970. He
then attended Oxford University where he obtained a Bachelor of
Arts (Honours) degree in 1973 and a Bachelor of Civil Law degree
in 1975. In July 1976, he was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar.
Mr. Lilly is a partner with the law firm of Stewart McKelvey
Stirling Scales.
B. Gale Welsh graduated from the University of Alberta with a
Bachelor of Education and spent several years as a teacher before
entering the University of Saskatchewan to study law. Ms. Welsh
graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of
Laws degree in 1983 and was called to the Saskatchewan bar in
July of 1984. She then spent four years working in the
Constitutional Branch of the Saskatchewan Department of Justice.
Ms. Welsh joined the Department of Justice in Newfoundland on
January 1, 1989 and was admitted to the Newfoundland bar in April
of that year. She now works as a solicitor in the Civil Division
of the Department of Justice in Newfoundland, specializing in
constitutional law and human rights.
The appointees will receive their commissions as Queen's
Counsel from Honourable Frederick Russell, Lieutenant-Governor of
Newfoundland, at a date to be announced later.
