Queen's Counsel Appointments

Edward Roberts, QC, Minister of Justice and Attorney General for Newfoundland and Labrador, is pleased to announce the Lieutenant- Governor in Council has appointed nine lawyers as Queen's Counsel.

The new Queen's Counsel are: John Byrne, George Horan, Reg Brown, Kevin Stamp, Ian Kelly, Robert Sinclair, Gillian Butler, Linda Rose and Colin Flynn.

John Byrne graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1969 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and from Dalhousie University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Laws degree. He was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in 1973 and has worked with the Department of Justice since that time. Mr. Byrne is a Crown attorney with the Special Prosecutions Unit of the department's Criminal Law Division.

George Horan graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970 and from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1973. He was called to the Bar of the province in 1974 and following 15 years in private practice, joined the Department of Justice in 1989. He is manager of the Civil Division's Government Services Unit.

Reginald Brown graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1977 he graduated from Queens University with a Bachelor of Laws degree and was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in December of that year. Mr. Brown is a partner in the law firm of O'Reilly, Noseworthy, and his preferred areas of practice include personal injury, insurance law and civil litigation.

Kevin Stamp graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1975 with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree. In 1978 he graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Laws degree and was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in December of that year. Mr. Stamp is a senior partner with the law firm of Martin, Whalen, Hennebury & Stamp. His preferred area of practice includes litigation and corporate and commercial law.

Ian Kelly graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) degree in 1973 and from Queen's University Faculty of Law in 1976. He was called to the Bar of the Province of Ontario in 1978 and in 1979 was called to the Newfoundland Bar. Mr. Kelly is a senior partner with Curtis, Dawe Law Firm and practices primarily in the field of civil litigation.

Robert Sinclair graduated in 1966 from Queen's University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and in 1969 from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Journalism degree. In 1978 Mr. Sinclair graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from Queen's University and was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in 1979. Robert Sinclair is a partner in the law firm of Patterson Palmer Hunt Murphy.

Gillian Butler graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1977 with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree. In 1980 she graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta and was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in December of that year. She is a partner with White Ottenheimer & Baker and her preferred practice is in the area of litigation and human rights.

Linda Rose graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1976 with a Bachelor of Social Work degree. In 1981, she graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Laws degree. Admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in 1982, Ms. Rose practices with the law firm of Parsons, Rose in St. John's.

Colin Flynn graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1972 and a Masters of Arts in 1975. In 1980, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Saskatchewan, and in 1981 obtained a Masters in Legal Studies from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Mr. Flynn was admitted to the Bar in 1982. He is the Director of Public Prosecutions for Newfoundland and Labrador.

The appointees will receive their commissions as Queen's Counsel from Hon. Frederick Russell, Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland, at a date to be announced later.
