Marketing company visits province as follow-up to trade mission

A marketing company from the Southampton Region of England will be visiting St. John's on July 3-6, 1996. The Southampton Region Marketing Company, represented by Mr. Kim Hayward, Director, and Ms. Lynne Halliday, Manager of Marketing, along with Dr. Gwyn Griffiths of the Southampton Oceanographic Centre will be hosted by the Advanced Technologies Division of the Department of Industry, Trade and Technology.

The visit is a follow-up to the department's recent strategic initiative, exhibiting at Oceanology International (OI) in Brighton, England and a trade mission to the Southampton Region in March 1996.

Prior to OI'96, the province made contact with representatives from the Southampton Region at Navigating Beyond in Rhode Island in April 1995. Under the previous administration, the Minister of Justice, Ed Roberts, visited the Southampton area in September 1995. As well, the Southampton Region Marketing Company hosted Premier Wells in December of 1995.

"Newfoundland and Labrador's link with the Southampton Region is marine-related. Both areas have a long maritime history and have developed expertise in marine technology including world class capabilities and facilities," says Charles J. Furey, Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology. "The opportunity exists for our companies and institutions to form strategic alliances and partnerships with the Southampton Region to generate economic growth which will benefit everyone concerned."

The group's trip to St. John's includes visits to Memorial University of Newfoundland, Marine Institute, Institute for Marine Dynamics including meetings with the Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering (C-CORE), the Newfoundland and Labrador Alliance of Technical Industries (NATI) and Newfoundland Ocean Industries Association (NOIA).
