Government to open Ottawa office

A new Newfoundland presence will be established in Ottawa tomorrow when Charles J. Furey, Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology, is joined by the federal Industry Minister, John Manley, to open the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's strategic procurement office.

The purpose of opening an Ottawa office is three-fold: to create awareness of Newfoundland's industrial capabilities, assist local companies that are pursuing some of the $75 billion annually that the federal government procures, and facilitate strategic alliances particularly in the information technology sector.

"The strategic procurement office will help identify and develop new business opportunities and facilitate business partnerships in various sectors," says Furey. "Every province west of New Brunswick has a procurement office in Ottawa and we wanted to ensure our companies have an equal opportunity to participate in the federal government contracts."

Donovan Arnaud will operate the office as a special advisor. He is familiar with the federal government procurement system. Mr. Arnaud will identify and develop new business opportunities and will act as a liaison for local companies in accessing pertinent information in a more timely fashion.
