1995 Export Awards presented

Companies that have excelled in the export of goods and services were presented with 1995 Newfoundland and Labrador Export awards at a ceremony in St. John's yesterday. Dr. Rex Gibbons, Minister of Natural Resources, made the presentations on behalf of Chuck Furey, Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology.

The winner in the Large Business (Manufacturing) category was NewTech Instruments of St. John's. NewTech is a manufacturer of electronic and custom designing of electromechanical components. One of its largest customers is General Motors, Diesel Division and the company has also done work for Northern Telecom plants in Belleville, Ontario and Galway, Ireland.

Wood-Pick Enterprises of Wareham, Bonavista Bay, was the recipient of the award in the Small Business (Manufacturing) category. The company is a smoked seafood operation which specializes in smoked Atlantic salmon, sea urchin roe (Uni), and other smoked seafood products. Wood-Pick markets smoked salmon to the CP Hotel chain and has successfully penetrated markets in Switzerland and Mexico.

In the same category, C & W Industrial Fabrication and Marine Equipment Ltd. of Bay Bulls received an honourable mention. The company is currently selling marine related products to Maine, Alaska, California, Washington, and Massachusetts. Most recently, the company entered markets in the Northwest Territories with a line of fully welded aluminum boats, and in Greenland, where it has a contract to manufacture processing equipment.

Nautical Data International of St. John's, the recipient of the Large Business (Service) award, is involved in digital mapping, one of the world's fastest growing industries. The company is currently exporting their products and expertise to a number of countries including the U.S. and Panama, as well as cultivating sales prospects in Columbia, Peru, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Asia.

The winner in the Small Business (Service) category was Seaborne Information Technologies of St. John's. The primary focus of the company's current export marketing activity is SmartMate, an automated shipboard emergency response planning system for oil pollution. The company has confirmed sales for 20 installed systems operating in Europe, Southeast Asia, the U.S. and Canada since 1992.

ShawMont Newfoundland Ltd. of St. John's, received an honourable mention for its involvement in an ongoing project called Southern Africa Developing Countries (SADC). ShawMont delivers a wide range of energy management transfer services and is the lead company in a consortium of companies from Quebec and British Columbia which has submitted a proposal to carry out a project in China.

Mr. Furey said the annual awards recognize the importance of exports to our province's economy, which continues to grow with the liberalization of world trade. He said: "It is important that we recognize the achievements of exporters in Newfoundland and Labrador and it is encouraging to see them capitalize on the rapid growth in global export opportunities."
