(Social Services)

The following is being distributed at the request of the Single Parents Association of Newfoundland and Labrador:

The Single Parents Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (SPANL) will be hosting a lunch for the Minister of Social Services, Joan Marie Aylward, today (November 13), to promote a concept called Community Kitchens. The idea, which is popular throughout Canada and other countries allows an inexpensive way to provide nutritious meals. SPANL will demonstrate how 60 meals can be provided for $48, at a cost of $2 per person per meal.

The program is available to single parents, seniors, students and others who would like to learn how to provide cost-effective, nutritious meals for their families. People must commit to three days a month to help plan the meals, and to purchase and prepare the food. A cookbook, featured in Chatelaine Magazine, has been developed to help participants with meal preparation and private groups and companies throughout the community provide subsidies to match participant funding.

The media is invited to attend the lunch to enjoy an inexpensive, nutritious meal, and to meet participants and SPANL board members who will discuss the program in greater detail.

Contact: Margaret Acreman, SPANL - (709) 753-9125.
