(Social Services)

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Social Services, announced today that as of November 1, 1996 her department will be providing educational support services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing and attending post secondary institutions in the province. The service, which was previously delivered by the Newfoundland Coordinating Council on Deafness, will be provided under the Training Services Program and will be delivered through the local district offices of the department. The service will include the provision of necessary supports which may include tutors, notetakers, notetaking paper, etc.

The minister said people currently receiving services from the department through the Training Services Program should contact their social workers to ensure continued provision of the educational supports they need. People in need of these supports/services should also contact local district offices of the Department of Social Services to obtain an application for rehabilitative services.
