Foster Families Week

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Social Services, officially declared October 20-26, 1996, Foster Families Week in this province. The proclamation was made at a recent signing ceremony attended by Ivy Benoit, President of the Foster Families Association, Judy-Ann Watson, Executive Director of the Foster Families Association, and Ms. Aylward.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Foster Families Association celebrates Foster Families Week as a time to recognize the contributions of foster families to society and to plan strategies for improving standards of care for children throughout the province.

The minister said foster parents deserve special recognition for the essential role they play in the development of children. "Through their guidance and support, foster parents provide the basis for children to develop into responsible and productive adults. Foster parents offer children hope, love, and a safe environment in which to live and grow."

The minister added that foster parents face many challenges in providing care for children and should be recognized for their contributions to the community. "During Foster Family Week, everyone should acknowledge the selfless commitment and dedication of foster parents. We should also recognize foster families throughout the year as valuable family units in today's society."
