Social Work Week - March 4 to 9

Kay Young, Minister of Social Services, today declared March 4 to 9, 1996, National Social Work Week in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The minister said she was pleased to make this declartion in recognition of the valuable role social workers play in our society. "Social workers deserve our appreciation for the many ways they contribute to our society. I encourage the citizens of our province to recognize Social Work Week and to acknowledge the positive effect the social work profession has had on the lives of countless individuals and communities throughout the province."

The minister added that social work is practiced in a variety of areas including family and child welfare programs, mental health services, hospitals, schools, social planning, non-profit organizations, drug and alcohol counselling, corrections, counselling centres, research and education, and private practice.

Social workers provide professional assistance to people seeking to overcome personal and social problems in order to lead satisfying, full, and productive lives. They offer services to individuals, families, groups and communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
