Allied Youth wins awards

Newfoundland and Labrador Allied Youth was represented at the 65th International Conference held in Halifax, Nova Scotia by 45 delegates and chaperones. Several concurrent sessions in Improves, Cooperatives and Youth, and Youth Entreprenuerialism were held as well as key note sessions from Motivational Media and Rick Mercer from This Hour Has 22 Minutes. The young people also toured the Discovery Centre, went swimming and shopping. The highlight of the four days was the election campaign for international president and the awards banquet. Our candidate Jenni Moores, from Grand Falls-Windsor Sr. Post #1017 was elected president with Greg Bolger from Torbay Sr. Post #1051, selected as a member of the cabinet.

The following awards were won by Newfoundland and Labrador Posts and Members:

  1. Francis Soper Award for Positive Lifestyle Initiatives (JR). St. Josephs Post #1136, Ferryland.
  2. Francis Soper Award for Positive Lifestyle Initiatives (SR). Baltimore High Post #1055, Ferryland.
  3. Edward M. Evans Memorial Award for Outstanding JR. Member. Pam Parsons from Post #1048, Twillingate.
  4. Senior Yearbook Award-Post #1041, Lamaline.
  5. Junior Yearbook Award-Post #1136 in St. Josephs, Ferryland.
  6. The Merritt Smith Memorial Award, Outstanding Post Advisor/Sponsor- Dave Dove, Post #1048, Twillingate.
  7. The Doctor Daniel Poling Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to Allied Youth, Deborah Armstrong, Grand Falls- Windsor.
  8. Mr. Friendship at Conference '96 - Jonathon Brockerville, Post #1138, Marystown.
  9. Ms. Friendship at Conference '96 - Emily Woolfrey, Post #1134, Coaker Academy.
