Health Minister to speak to Ontario Hospital Association

Health Minister Lloyd Matthews will be speaking to the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) on Monday, November 4 to provide an overview of health reform initiatives in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Mr. Matthews will be part of a panel discussion, which will also involve the Minister of Health in Manitoba, Jim McCrae, a representative from the Alberta Government, as well as a Health Canada representative.

"Compared with many other jurisdictions, Newfoundland has to move forward quickly in implementing reform measures, largely because the economic circumstances have not allowed for delays," said Mr. Matthews. "Some other provinces have not had that same urgency over the years and are now looking at other jurisdictions as examples of the kinds of reforms that can be implemented."

There are many unique characteristics in this province, including the economy, geography and population demographics that have shaped the way health reform has evolved. Mr. Matthews will be asked to speak about those challenges as well as the evolution of reform in Newfoundland and Labrador, from the Royal Commission in 1984 to the current restructuring plan in St. John's. As well, Mr. Matthews will identify strategic directions for this province to guide ongoing reform initiatives.
